Link your ChatGPT ad to the correct product variant

Check that the destination behind a ChatGPT ad selects the intended colour, size and configuration. Follow the variant through redirects, selection and basket.

The working guide

What you can work through.

Product data and catalog work
  • Preselect only the attributes that the advertised offer actually determines.
  • Test the exact destination for both a new visitor and a returning shopper.
  • Make an unavailable variant a visible decision instead of silently substituting it.

A paid ChatGPT ad might show an amber jug with a capacity of 1.2 litres while its link opens the clear 0.7-litre version. This hypothetical example illustrates a destination problem: the shopper must rebuild the offer that prompted the click. A recognisable product name and a page that loads successfully would not expose the mismatch.

Start by defining the state the product page should display on arrival. Which variant should appear, which options should be selected, and which decisions remain open? This guide concerns the address and its initial selection. The separate guide to clear product variant names covers how those options should be labelled.

Record what the ad has already specified

Work from the actual creative or feed item. Record the product family, colour, size, capacity and package configuration when those attributes explicitly belong to the advertised offer. Leave attributes open when the customer still needs to choose them. Showing a blue jacket may justify selecting blue, but it does not establish the visitor’s size.

Make this distinction before someone copies a product address. Otherwise a temporary selection in the editor’s browser can become the campaign’s accidental default. An earlier visit with medium selected offers no reason to give the next advertising visitor the same size.

When choosing a size requires body measurements or a fit preference, make that next step visible. Read size selection after a ChatGPT ad click for the supporting information. A variant address can carry a selection; it cannot establish that the selection fits an individual.

Locate the source of the destination

OpenAI documents a destination supplied by a standard chat-card ad. For product-feed ads, the selected product supplies the destination. This distinction tells the advertiser where to investigate when the wrong variant opens. Campaign Management, Product Feeds.

Compare the ad’s address or the feed item’s address with the address your shop uses for the intended variant. Correct the link at its source. Rewriting the product description on the website will not repair a different destination stored in the advertising setup.

Keep a small working record containing the internal variant identifier, advertised configuration and intended address. The identifier distinguishes similar items even when a title changes. This is an operational reference, rather than a prescription for the technical field names that every shop must use.

Use an address that recreates the selection

A shop may express variants in its path or through address parameters. Ask the person responsible for the shop which method it supports and what happens when a variant no longer exists. Do not assume an address copied from a browser will work without that browser’s saved state.

In the hypothetical jug example, the shop might use variant=jug-amber-12. This is an illustrative parameter only, not a ChatGPT advertising or ecommerce standard. The test is whether the address alone selects amber and 1.2 litres without relying on saved cookies or previous interactions.

Also open the address with the tracking parameters intended for the campaign. OpenAI documents separate configuration for those parameters. Inspect the completed destination, including any redirects, instead of testing only the base link. Campaign Management. The broader UTM tracking guide covers campaign labels; the concern here is whether they leave the product selection intact.

Require a visible, coherent selection

On arrival, the shopper should be able to confirm the variant without interpreting the address. The option selector, main image, price and availability information should describe the same configuration. When a value is still loading, an earlier value should not look like confirmation of the new selection.

Pay particular attention to dependent options. One colour might come in two capacities while another has only one. If the destination requests a combination that does not exist, the page needs to explain that problem. Silently resetting only capacity can leave the expected colour visible beside an unexpected quantity.

A neutral product page can be appropriate when the ad promotes an entire series. In that case, ask the shopper to make the necessary choices. Record this intention in the advertising brief so reviewers can distinguish an intentionally open choice from a lost preselection.

Decision guide

What should the jug link preselect?

  1. Amber, 1.2 litres

The ad specifies both: open the same colour and capacity.

  2. Amber, several capacities

Select the colour and ask the shopper to choose capacity before purchase.

  3. The full jug series

Open the series with clear choices and no unsupported capacity default.

  4. 1.2 litres discontinued

Explain the missing configuration and let the shopper accept an alternative.

Hypothetical example: selection follows the offer's specificity, and the shopper decides what the offer leaves open.

Test transitions that can change the variant

Try the same address in several distinct situations. This table proposes a review method; it does not report findings from a real campaign.

Situation What to establish
First visit The address selects the correct variant without previous shopping history.
Return visit with another saved choice The old selection does not overwrite the ad’s explicit variant.
Language or market change The shopper can see whether the equivalent configuration exists.
Redirect after an address change The final destination preserves the variant’s meaning and necessary parameters.

Then ask the reviewer to change the variant manually and navigate back. This tests whether the visible selection and shareable address still correspond. A link copied after making a new choice should not secretly recreate the original advertised option.

Test the route on the smallest screen you support as well. A selected option hidden inside a collapsed control is harder to verify than a short visible summary near the purchase action. The summary should describe the actual selection, including any choice still required.

Decide what happens when the variant disappears

A once-correct destination can become outdated when the range changes. Assign responsibility for updating the ad or feed item and for presenting alternatives on the website. A redirect to the product family may be understandable if the page clearly explains that the configuration has been discontinued and allows a new choice.

Do not select another colour, size or quantity as though it were the advertised offer. An alternative may be useful, but accepting it is a new purchase decision. The stock-status guide explains temporary unavailability and other availability states in more detail.

Finish the check in the basket

Add the intended variant to a basket without submitting an order. Compare its identifier where visible, configuration, quantity and price with the product-page selection. Then change the variant manually and establish that this choice also reaches the basket correctly.

Record the checked address, date, expected variant and any discrepancy. A useful acceptance criterion is that the ad’s explicit choices survive, remaining choices are visible, and the basket reflects the customer’s final decision. Repeat the check when variant structures, market routes or the shop’s default selections change.

Sources and scope

Choose and verify the variant destination so the selected options, product image, price and basket match the advertised configuration.
