The working guide

What you can work through.

Product data and catalog work
  • Apply stock messages to the selected variant and quantity.
  • Distinguish confirmed unavailability from a failed stock check.
  • Check both the feed and the destination when availability changes.

A green “In stock” label does little good when it describes a different colour from the one in the ChatGPT ad. After a paid click, the product page needs to answer a specific question: can the customer buy this selected item now? Put the answer where the customer chooses a variant and proceeds towards purchase.

For the advertiser, that answer also affects which products make sense to keep advertising. A working destination link is insufficient when the advertised version is unavailable. The workflow below concerns current stock for products still in the assortment. Preorders and permanently discontinued items need different explanations.

Start with the item the ad actually presents

Consider a fictional shop advertising an amber table lamp, 28 centimetres tall, in ChatGPT. Its product page also offers a grey version and a larger model. The small amber lamp is temporarily sold out, but plenty of grey lamps remain. A shared “In stock” label above the colour selector creates the wrong expectation.

Apply the message to the selected combination: “Amber, 28 cm: temporarily out of stock.” Keep the name, image, selected variant and purchase action consistent. When the customer chooses grey, update availability with that choice. Keep the amber option understandable even when it cannot currently be purchased.

Check quantity as well. Being able to buy one lamp does not establish that five can be ordered. When the customer changes the quantity, either confirm the new amount or explain the actual limit. A message that only two are available is more useful than a generic error after five have been added to the basket.

Give four states different meanings

Treat the stock message and the next action as one explanation. These four states are an editorial model for the shop page, rather than a list of advertising platform fields.

Page state Useful explanation Appropriate next action
No variant selected Choose colour and size to check availability Select a variant
Available Selected variant is available in the requested quantity Add to basket
Temporarily unavailable Selected variant cannot be purchased now Choose another variant or a real stock alert
Stock check fails Availability could not be confirmed Retry or use a genuine contact route

The last state should not automatically become “Sold out”. A technical failure does not establish physical inventory. Equally, avoid displaying a reassuring “In stock” while a check is still running. See keeping the offer understandable while it loads when availability arrives after the rest of the page.

A stock alert is appropriate only if the shop can actually accept the request and send a notification. Its label should explain what the customer is joining. It must not suggest that an item has been reserved or that a replenishment date is already confirmed.

Decision guide

One lamp, four possible stock messages

  1. Variant not yet selected

Request colour and size before showing a purchase-ready stock claim.

  2. Amber, 28 cm: available

Confirm the selected quantity and offer purchase of that exact lamp.

  3. Amber, 28 cm: temporarily out

Preserve the item identity and offer only next steps that really exist.

  4. The stock check failed

State that stock is unconfirmed and provide a way to retry.

The message and action apply to the selected variant and quantity, not the whole product family.

Separate stock, delivery and reservation

“In stock” answers an availability question. It does not by itself tell the customer when a parcel will arrive. Present any delivery estimate separately, with the conditions needed to interpret it. Combining both questions into “Available soon” leaves people unsure whether the item exists in stock or is expected later.

The shop also needs to know what happens when someone adds an item to the basket. If that action does not reserve inventory, the wording should not promise a reservation. Inspect the actual shop behaviour before writing the message. A saved basket may need another availability check when its owner returns.

In the lamp example, two people could attempt to purchase the last amber lamp. Decide how the person unable to complete their order learns about the change. Preserve the selected variant and quantity so they can understand it. Emptying the whole basket or silently switching to grey makes an informed new choice harder.

Trace the same change through the catalogue

OpenAI says feed availability should stay current. Marking an item out of stock affects ad delivery after the update propagates. Returning it to stock makes it eligible for consideration once the other requirements are met. See OpenAI: Product Feeds.

When someone discovers the wrong stock message, inspect more than the text on the page. Compare the shop’s inventory source, the intended variant in the advertising feed and the destination opened by its link. Record the item identifier and what each step says. Use the ChatGPT ads product-feed guide when reviewing the underlying catalogue preparation.

If the lamp is unavailable in the shop but available in the feed, the feed owner needs to correct that information. If the feed is correct but the page displays an old label, the fault is elsewhere. Recolouring the label without identifying its source will not resolve the inconsistency.

OpenAI also documents separate pause controls for ads, ad groups and campaigns in Campaign Management. Review the affected advertising while the stock discrepancy is corrected. A page edit should not be treated as confirmation that the campaign’s status changed.

Decide how precise the message can be

Exact stock counts help when the business can keep them sufficiently current. They are less useful when store purchases, reservations and online orders update at different intervals. Choose the level of detail according to the inventory process. Do not use “Only one left” as default urgency copy.

If you show a last-checked time, it should refer to the inventory check itself. The page’s last publication time is different. Where stock depends on a selected store or market, explain which context the message covers. A lamp held elsewhere is not automatically available for the purchase this visitor is trying to make.

Review the transition, not only the normal page

Open the actual advertising destination in a test environment. Check an available variant, a temporary stockout and a failed availability check. Repeat with a different quantity. Read both the message beside the selector and the one beside the purchase action, including any button fixed to the bottom of a mobile screen.

Also inspect a return to a previously opened page. An old availability message should not travel unchecked all the way into purchase. Record the variant, the observed state and the recovery behaviour. The work is ready when the customer can understand availability and make a deliberate choice even after inventory has changed.

Sources and scope

Decide which current stock message and purchase action the selected product variant should show to visitors arriving from a paid ChatGPT ad.
