How to track ChatGPT ads with UTMs and useful conversion checks

Build a practical measurement plan for ChatGPT ads with UTM naming examples, GA4 checks, conversion definitions and a clear view of what each report measures.

Editorial illustration: three parcels have separate tags with different colour marks.

A click tells you someone reached for the offer. It does not tell you whether they bought, sent a useful enquiry or found the page confusing. A workable ChatGPT ads measurement plan connects three things: the campaign, what happened on the website and the outcome the business actually values.

The examples below are a proposed naming convention and reporting workflow. They are not automatic platform macros, benchmark results or a claim that every metric appears inside AthillyAds.

Give each report a specific job

Use this division when deciding where to investigate a problem:

Question Where to investigate
Did the campaign deliver and spend? Ads Manager and connected campaign reporting
Which tagged campaign brought visits? Website analytics, such as GA4
Did an important action happen? A tested website event, order record or CRM entry
Was the enquiry useful? Sales review with an agreed qualification rule
Which conversions does the ad platform attribute? Configured conversion measurement in Ads Manager

AthillyAds provides connected delivery metrics such as impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC and CPM. Do not assume a website event, purchase value or lead qualification is present just because a campaign is connected. Keep the website and business checks in your measurement plan.

Use one consistent UTM convention

UTM parameters label a destination URL so analytics can identify the campaign visit. Google’s campaign URL guidance explains manual tagging and the Traffic acquisition report. Naming is case-sensitive, so choose a convention once.

Here is an illustrative scheme for a Swedish office-cleaning offer:

Parameter Example value Meaning in this scheme
utm_source chatgpt The traffic source
utm_medium cpc Paid click traffic
utm_campaign se_office_cleaning_2026q4 Market, offer and test period
utm_id office_se_01 A stable ID recorded in your campaign sheet
utm_source_platform openai_ads The platform label your team uses
utm_content office_quote_a The specific ad variation

Use a medium that describes your actual buying setup; this example assumes a CPC campaign. The labels are values chosen by the advertiser. They do not guarantee a particular GA4 default channel classification.

A shortened example URL is:

https://example.com/office-cleaning/?utm_source=chatgpt&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=se_office_cleaning_2026q4&utm_content=office_quote_a

Keep the complete naming sheet beside your campaign brief. Do not put a person’s name, email, customer ID or conversation text into a tracking URL. If the destination already has a query string, append additional parameters with &, rather than adding a second ?.

Before submission, follow this small test sequence:

  1. Open the exact tagged destination on a phone and desktop.
  2. Check the final address after language, trailing-slash and other redirects.
  3. Confirm that any existing product or booking parameters still work.
  4. Verify the analytics event using your normal test or debug workflow, with the appropriate consent state.
  5. Complete a test enquiry or approved test order and identify it as a test in your records.
  6. Check that the recorded campaign label matches the naming sheet.

Avoid using real ad clicks as a routine testing method. Once real traffic arrives, inspect actual acquisition rows too. A controlled test verifies the setup; it cannot recreate every visitor’s browser, consent choice or path to purchase. If visits unexpectedly appear as direct traffic, trace where campaign context is lost or classified differently before assigning those visits to the campaign.

Define a conversion before installing more tracking

For lead generation, a submitted form may be the technical event while a qualified lead is the commercial outcome. For ecommerce, a purchase event needs a clear relationship to an actual order and the value you intend to compare. Decide how cancellations, duplicate submissions and test records will be handled in your own reporting.

OpenAI offers conversion measurement through its pixel and Conversions API. Its documentation describes an oppref click reference; redirects should preserve it. Follow the current conversion measurement instructions for the chosen integration. UTMs alone do not configure that integration.

If browser and server systems send the same event, include deduplication in the implementation review. Keep tracking configuration and the site’s consent behavior aligned. Verify the available settings in your actual advertiser account before treating platform conversion reporting as ready.

Expect different totals, then investigate the useful differences

Suppose an illustrative test shows 80 ad clicks, 62 analytics sessions and four enquiries. Those numbers alone do not prove that 18 clicks were lost or that every enquiry came from the same visit. Clicks and sessions count different things, and consent, repeated visits and attribution rules can affect the reports.

Start with consistent dates, time zones and campaign labels. Compare a completed time period, inspect the destination and check for tracking failures before changing creative. Review the four enquiries with sales: their quality may matter more than a superficial click-to-form percentage.

Turn the review into one decision

Record the spend, observed delivery, website actions, qualified outcomes and anything still unverified. Then choose one next step: fix a broken destination, clarify the offer, review targeting, continue gathering data or pause a test that reached its agreed limit.

Our first-week review guide turns that process into a practical schedule. If you are still preparing the campaign, use the pre-flight checklist to catch tracking and destination issues before submission.
