An expired offer behind a ChatGPT ad: what the page should show

Plan the destination state when a ChatGPT ad offer ends. Explain expiry, distinguish replacements and keep saved links understandable without continuing the old promise.

What you can work through.

Landing page content and structure
  • Plan the expired state before the offer launches.
  • Explain what ended and what remains available.
  • Do not silently replace the original offer with a different promise.

A campaign can end while its destination continues to receive visits. Someone may have saved the link, kept a browser tab open or shared the offer with a colleague. The page therefore needs an end state that remains understandable after the advertised opportunity has passed.

For a ChatGPT advertiser, this is more than changing a date in a banner. The old offer may still appear in a heading, a booking form, a downloadable document or a confirmation message. The destination should stop making the expired promise while helping the visitor understand what happened.

Decide what “ended” means

An offer can end in several ways. A workshop cohort closes for registration. A package is replaced. A promotional price expires while the underlying service remains. A limited product is no longer available. Those situations need different explanations.

For a fictional design workshop advertised in ChatGPT, registration might close on a specified date while the workshop itself happens later. A page saying “The workshop has ended” would be inaccurate during that interval. “Registration for this cohort is closed” identifies the actual change.

Write the end condition when preparing the offer. Record what changes on the page, which actions stop being available and which alternatives can truthfully be offered. Do not wait for the first late enquiry to discover that the booking form still accepts requests for a closed cohort.

Keep enough of the old identity to orient the reader

A saved link should not lead without explanation to a generic homepage. The visitor needs to recognise the workshop or package they were considering. Preserve the offer name and a concise statement of its current status where appropriate.

Then show the relevant next route. That could be the next confirmed cohort, a general enquiry about future dates or an archive of the workshop details. Do not advertise a future event as available when its date and scope have not been decided. A waitlist is only an appropriate label if the business actually maintains one.

An expired promotion can instead show the current standard offer, clearly distinguishing the former price from what is available now. The old amount should not remain as the dominant actionable price. The price explanation guide covers the surrounding price context.

Decision guide

Closed can mean different things

  1. Registration closed

The event may still be in the future.

  2. Promotion ended

    Show the current standard offer.

  3. Package replaced

Label the replacement as a new choice.

The right expiry message depends on which part of the offer ended.

Review the whole offer surface

Use a small inventory of the places where the promise appears. Include the page opening, action labels, embedded booking options, product cards, supporting files and final messages. A single updated sentence does not repair contradictions elsewhere.

For the workshop, the inventory could reveal that the page says registration is closed while the calendar still displays the old session. The correction needs to address both. If the system cannot disable that session immediately, the page should not continue to send visitors into it as a valid booking route.

OpenAI’s campaign management documentation describes ad creative and its destination URL. Review the associated advertising through its own process as well. Updating the website does not establish that the old offer has been removed from active creative. Record which ad and destination were checked, and check the public page through the actual destination link after the change.

Label replacements as replacements

A new workshop may cover a similar topic but have a different duration, audience or delivery method. Present it as the next option, not as though the original link always referred to it. The reader should be able to compare the change before acting.

For a product, distinguish a successor model from the exact original item. If accessories or compatibility differ, those differences matter. See discontinued products for the product-specific route. An alternative that solves a similar need is still an alternative.

Avoid using expiry as a reason to redirect every old offer to the current best-selling item. That may preserve a technically working URL while breaking the customer’s understanding. The chosen route should follow a genuine relationship to the original task.

Handle visitors already partway through

A person may open the page before the deadline and continue after it. Decide how the booking or purchase system handles that boundary and make the customer-facing message match. Do not imply that leaving a tab open reserves the offer unless the business has a real reservation mechanism.

State the deadline’s time zone when customers could interpret it differently. Also decide whether eligibility is determined when the request reaches the system, when payment completes or at another defined event. Those are different rules. The page should explain the rule the business actually applies, especially when a customer started before the deadline but finishes afterwards.

If a selection is no longer valid, identify the affected part and allow the person to review current options. Preserve other appropriate input so the customer does not unnecessarily repeat their work. The return-visit guide covers the difference between remembered selections and current availability.

Test the transition using a controlled scenario. Inspect a fresh visit after expiry and a previously opened journey crossing the boundary. Verify that the page, form and confirmation do not disagree about what can be requested.

Make the end state maintainable

Assign an owner for the page transition and the linked assets. Where possible, keep the expiry condition connected to the actual offer record rather than duplicating dates in unrelated content fields. The implementation can vary, but the responsibility should be clear.

After the change, follow the old link as a customer would. The page should answer three practical questions: which offer this was, what is no longer available and what can be done now. That is enough to turn a dead end into an honest continuation without extending a promise that has finished.
