The working guide

What you can work through.

Product data and catalog work
  • Confirm permanent withdrawal before treating a product as finished.
  • Stop relevant promotion and update catalog data as separate tasks.
  • Preserve product identity and label any next choice clearly.

A product permanently leaving the range needs two different endings: one for its paid ChatGPT promotion and another for its former product page. New paid visits should not continue meeting an offer the business has stopped selling. Someone may still open a saved ad destination to identify the model, check an earlier purchase or understand what changed.

Start with two decisions: how will the old product’s paid exposure stop, and what should its existing address explain? Changing the purchase button does not resolve the advertising task. Stopping the campaign does not make the page understandable. This guide concerns permanent withdrawal, rather than a temporary gap in stock.

Confirm what has actually been discontinued

Ask the assortment owner to define the scope. Is the entire model finished, one color or a particular market? Will remaining units be sold until depleted? Are accepted orders still due to be fulfilled? An internal label such as “discontinued” can otherwise mean different things to purchasing, customer support and advertising.

In a hypothetical example, a shop stops ordering a particular table lamp. Ten units remain in one color, while another color has sold out and will never return. The first state may still represent a real offer if the shop has chosen to sell the remainder. The second needs a finished sales message. These quantities are invented and do not describe observed results.

Record the decision by affected product or variant, with an owner, scope and sales cutoff. If only a discount ends while the item continues selling, the issue is an expired offer. That distinction determines which ad promise needs to end and what the page should explain.

Find every paid route to the former offer

Inventory direct ads, product selections and campaign pages in which the discontinued model is central. Include creative that names or pictures the model even when the destination is a category. The category may continue working technically while the specific promise in the ad has become inaccurate.

Choose the narrowest understandable change that covers the problem. One obsolete offer does not necessarily mean ending every ad for the shop. A campaign devoted entirely to the former model may have no continuing purpose, however. Record the affected ads or selections so somebody else can check the scope.

OpenAI’s campaign documentation describes pausing and archiving ads and campaigns. A campaign pause prevents its child ads from serving. Choose the action for the affected scope and inspect the result in the tool or integration actually being used. A website change does not demonstrate a changed advertising status.

Change the catalog and inspect the result

Reflect the assortment decision in the source that produces the advertising catalog. A manual correction further along the chain may otherwise be replaced by the next export. Keep product identifiers and variant scope explicit so the former lamp is not confused with a model that still sells.

OpenAI’s product-feed guide describes explicit out_of_stock updates and asynchronous propagation. Follow the documented method for stopping unavailable products instead of assuming that removing a row is enough. Inspect processing and the affected items after the update.

The technical availability value does not need to be the same wording customers see. “Discontinued” may be the appropriate website explanation for an item that will never return. Catalog values must follow the relevant specification. The broader product-feed preparation guide covers core catalog information and ongoing responsibility.

Give the former address a useful purpose

Decide whether the page still serves product identification, documentation or an explanation of the assortment change. If retained, its model name and image should help someone recognize the earlier ad. Put the permanent sales message close to where a visitor would otherwise select a variant and buy.

Remove contradictory actions. A back-in-stock notification implies a future delivery could happen. An empty date accompanied by “back soon” creates the same expectation. If no return is planned, do not collect interest under that promise. A contact route can still be useful for existing owners, provided somebody actually handles those questions.

Avoid silently sending every old product address to the homepage. That removes the connection between the advertised model and the content displayed. Whether to retain, replace or retire the address itself requires a separate technical assessment; the customer explanation must remain coherent whichever implementation is chosen.

Workflow

Retire the product across four surfaces

  1. Assortment decision

Identify the exact model, variant and market leaving the range.

    Checkpoint
  2. Paid promotion

End or pause ads that still promise the former product.

    Reconsider
  3. Catalog source

Correct the source and verify processing so the next export cannot restore the error.

  4. Former address

Preserve recognition and explain the permanent end to late visitors.

    Checkpoint
Permanent withdrawal, paid delivery and the former address require distinct checks.

Introduce a new choice without rewriting the old one

Where a relevant current range exists, offer a clearly labeled route to it. “Explore our current reading lamps” makes a different promise from “Buy this lamp.” Explain that another choice is required. Do not send the visitor directly to another product on the assumption that a similar name makes it equivalent.

If there is a genuine successor, assess its relationship to the former model before presenting it as a replacement. That work, including differences affecting the purchase decision, belongs in the replacement product guide. The task here is to keep the discontinued product’s status accurate and provide an understandable next route.

Finish with three checks: open the old ad destination, inspect the current catalog entry and review the affected ads’ status. Also inspect the next routine export to see whether obsolete source information returns. The work is complete when the permanent assortment decision survives subsequent updates and a late visitor can understand what ended.

Sources and scope

Manage a product permanently leaving the range by ending the relevant paid promotion and keeping the former destination understandable for late visitors.
