The working guide

What you can work through.

Product data and catalog work
  • Attach every stock and collection message to a named location.
  • Distinguish an accepted order from a ready-to-collect order.
  • Provide the address, collection hours and practical instructions with confirmation.

A customer chooses a product from a paid ChatGPT ad and sees “Collect in store.” That still leaves the practical decision unresolved. Which store has the correct variant? Does ordering reserve it? Can the customer leave immediately, or must staff first prepare the goods? A useful collection journey answers these questions in the order in which they become relevant.

Connect location with order status. A store can be open while its collection counter is closed. A product can exist in local stock while a particular order remains unprepared. A single positive badge should not represent every stage from availability to collection. Include this check in the wider ad-destination review, which also considers the offer and the customer’s next action.

Location belongs in the product decision

Start by showing which location is being checked. If the destination suggests a nearby store, let customers see and change that selection. Someone ordering at work may want to collect near home. A suggested location should not silently determine where the purchase will be completed.

Give the store name and enough address detail to distinguish it from other locations. If collection happens at a separate warehouse or entrance, explain this before the order. A map link can help with directions, but the address and essential instructions also need to appear as readable text.

Check the selected variant and quantity at that location. Availability in a central warehouse does not establish that the item is prepared in every branch. The guide to stock status for the selected product covers availability; the collection journey must also explain what the selected location can do with a new order.

Separate three messages that invite different actions

Give distinct meanings to available for collection ordering, order received and ready to collect. The first helps a customer choose a possible location. The second confirms that the business has received an order. The third should mean that the actual preparation is complete and the customer can follow the collection instructions.

Establish whether inventory is reserved when the customer orders, after payment approval or following a manual check. Describe the actual process. If the action is a reservation request, the button and acknowledgement need to say so. Do not issue a confident collection instruction while staff still need to confirm that the goods exist.

A pending status also needs an understandable next step. Say how the readiness message will arrive and how the customer can return to their order details. Promise a preparation period only when the operation can support it. Where timing cannot yet be established, a clear waiting message is preferable to an automatically generated time with no operational basis.

Follow one purchase to the correct collection point

Imagine a hypothetical building-supplies retailer advertising floor tiles sold by the carton. A customer needs six cartons and selects South Store. The site shows local availability, but pickup occurs in a warehouse behind the shop. Staff need to gather the correct batch before the order is ready.

Before purchasing, the customer should see that collection covers six cartons of the selected tiles at South Store, that preparation is required and that they must wait for a readiness message before travelling. The order acknowledgement should not simultaneously say “come whenever you like” if that instruction is not yet true.

Once the order is prepared, provide the collection address, current pickup hours and whatever identification the business actually needs to locate the order. If another person may collect, explain the established process. Request only information needed by that real procedure rather than inventing additional requirements in the copy.

The tile example may also need carton weights and information about loading assistance. These are product and location details to verify with the operation. An attractive shop photograph does not explain where a vehicle should stop or what the customer will need to carry themselves.

Workflow

From selected store to departure

  1. Choose location and quantity

Check the correct variant at a named store or warehouse.

  2. Order received

Explain reservation and waiting while staff prepare the goods.

  3. Readiness confirmed

Confirm that this specific order is prepared for collection.

  4. Travel to the correct pickup point

Use the current address, collection hours and order instructions.

A collection order needs clear status changes before the customer travels.

Changing location requires another check

If the customer switches from South Store to North Store, availability, preparation time and collection instructions may change. Do not retain a previous readiness indication or estimate as though it applies to the new location. Keep the selected store visible in the basket and final order summary.

If only part of an order can be collected there, explain the limitation before purchase is completed. Your retailer may support split collection, a stock transfer or another fulfilment method. Describe only the options the operation can provide, including any relevant differences in cost and waiting time.

Home delivery is a separate option with its own conditions. The guide to delivery estimates helps when a customer compares transport to an address with collecting the goods themselves. For services performed at a customer’s premises, use service-area checks. A collection address does not establish that home visits are offered in the surrounding area.

Review the handover from ad to retailer

OpenAI describes destinations in Campaign Management and product information in Product Feeds. Follow the product link used in the advertising. Your shop review should then cover location selection, order acceptance and readiness without assuming that the advertising platform knows whether a local order has been prepared.

An ad message emphasizing fast collection needs checking against the locations and goods the destination actually offers. If it applies only to selected products or particular opening periods, retain that condition with the offer. Changes to collection hours need to reach both the page and the team preparing the orders.

Read the messages as someone about to travel

Review the journey on a phone, beginning with a fresh advertising link. Choose a store, change the quantity and then switch locations. Follow a trial order from pending to ready in the shop’s test environment or through a walkthrough with the order owner. Check that no stage tells the customer to travel prematurely.

Finish by reading the readiness message without the rest of the website. Can someone find the correct collection point, understand its hours and identify their order? If basic facts require an old browser tab or a telephone call, add them to the message. A working collection option ends with a clear and current instruction the customer can act on.

Sources and scope

Explain location selection and the progression to confirmed collection readiness so customers know where, when and after which message an advertised item can be collected.

Working methods and examples are editorial suggestions. Check current platform requirements and available features before implementation.
