When a stakeholder approves SEK 9,000 for a ChatGPT campaign, an essential detail remains: is that the amount for the entire test or for each day? Budget type is part of the decision, not simply a setting beside the number. Misreading it can produce a campaign with a very different economic brief from the one approved.
Start with a complete sentence stating the amount, currency and whether it applies to a period or to each day. The person configuring advertising can then choose the appropriate available control and check its compatibility with the intended bidding strategy.
Understand the two meanings
OpenAI Bidding & Budgets describes daily budgets as daily spending limits and lifetime budgets as total campaign limits. A campaign uses one type at a time. Maximize Results requires a daily budget, while fixed bidding supports either type.
These are documented API concepts. Verify how they map to the actual account and interface being used. Documentation of an API field does not establish that the same control appears in every connected service.
Lifetime refers to the campaign’s overall allowance, not customer lifetime value or an automatic monthly renewal. Daily refers to a daily amount. Neither label establishes that the full amount will actually be spent. Do not assume a guaranteed even distribution, a universal overdelivery rule or a minimum amount that applies to every account.
Translate the business decision into a working plan
Suppose, hypothetically, an advertiser allocates SEK 9,000 to a test lasting 15 complete days. An even internal plan is SEK 600 per day. Multiplying 600 by 15 gives 9,000, but that arithmetic does not make the two budget settings interchangeable.
A total allowance expresses the amount available across the campaign under the selected control. A daily allowance needs an intended period and monitoring of cumulative spend. If the test is extended for five more days, the original fifteen-day plan no longer describes the complete run.
Record both time and amount in the campaign brief. Identify who may approve an extension and the business condition they should review. The project end date and the campaign’s actual scheduling settings need to agree. Do not assume that changing the planning document automatically changes the live campaign.
This distinction also helps when someone asks for an ongoing campaign with a monthly management allowance. The management period is a reporting and approval decision. It should not be silently translated into a lifetime budget that is assumed to renew itself.
Include bidding strategy in the decision
An advertiser intending to use an available strategy that seeks more clicks or conversions should check its budget requirements before building the campaign. If that strategy requires a daily budget, manage the overall project allowance through the internal plan and the appropriate controls actually available.
Do not choose fixed bidding solely to gain a particular budget type without understanding the work involved in managing bids. Equally, a budget change should not quietly become a change in optimization objective. Record the intended combination so a reviewer can examine the whole configuration.
The useful comparison is which budget type expresses the business’s control requirement while remaining compatible with the campaign. It is not a general claim that one type produces cheaper purchases or better results.
Treat updates as new amounts
Suppose the example’s lifetime budget increases from SEK 9,000 to SEK 11,000. The new total is SEK 11,000 and the increase is SEK 2,000. It is not an additional SEK 11,000. If SEK 1,800 has already been spent, the internal calculation leaves SEK 9,200 against the new total.
Similarly, changing a daily budget from SEK 600 to SEK 800 establishes a new daily amount of SEK 800. It does not add SEK 800 to the old daily amount. Nor does the new setting promise that future actual spend will match it.
The documentation allows a lifetime budget to change to daily, while the reverse requires a new campaign. It also prevents reducing a lifetime budget below spend already incurred. Check these conditions before promising a change internally, particularly when several ad groups share the campaign.
If a new campaign is needed, include the reporting consequence in the handover. Its identifier will differ, so the person compiling the test result needs to know which periods and campaigns belong together. That is a bookkeeping requirement for your analysis, not a reason to merge unrelated results.
Which amount has the business approved?
- Recurring daily allowance
SEK 600 per day describes a daily amount. 600 × 15 = SEK 9,000 is an internal fifteen-day plan.
- One total campaign allowance
A SEK 9,000 lifetime budget refers to the entire campaign. It is not SEK 9,000 for every day.
- Strategy constrains the choice
OpenAI documents daily budgets for Maximize Results. Fixed bidding can use daily or lifetime budgets.
- A new total when updating
Changing a lifetime budget from SEK 9,000 to SEK 11,000 increases the total by SEK 2,000.
Identify the level the budget controls
The campaign budget covers its ad groups. Adding another group does not give it an independent campaign allowance. If two business areas need separate budget decisions, the campaign structure must support that separation.
Use the campaign structure overview when grouping and ownership are unclear. Keep any account-level controls distinct from the campaign budget and verify which account functions are actually available. An internal spreadsheet total is not itself an automatic platform spending control.
Read the saved configuration back
Check campaign identifier, currency, budget type and saved amount together. The correct number attached to the wrong type is still wrong. Technical integrations also need the unit check in the budget micros conversion guide. A plausible-looking integer can represent a dramatically incorrect monetary amount.
Ask the reviewer to read the decision in ordinary currency units as well as technical fields. Retain before and after values for a change. That record makes it possible to distinguish an approved increase from a unit error or an incomplete report later.
Follow actual spend after activation
Use OpenAI Reporting or the reporting solution available to the account to follow actual advertising cost. Compare equivalent periods and use the budget pacing method to assess how spend develops against the business plan.
If less than planned has been spent, investigate before increasing the allowance. If the business changes its timeframe or ambition, update the brief and campaign as two traceable steps. A useful budget choice keeps the approved decision, saved setting and observed outcome understandable as separate facts.
Sources and scope
Select the appropriate campaign budget type and interpret its amount correctly when creating or changing ChatGPT advertising.
